Katie Mae Rouse Alphin, also known as Fred to those who knew her best, passed away peacefully at her home in Lagrange at the age of 95 on November 18, 2020. Ms Alphin was the widow of Frank Alphin and the daughter of the late Ed and Chloe Ann Outlaw Rouse. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by Brothers Melvin Rouse, Marvin Rouse, James Bryant Rouse; Sisters Olive Chambers, Edna Sutton, Clara Jones; Daughter Betty Davis; Grandsons Kevin Smith and Frankie Alphin.
Ms. Katie was born in Duplin County on April 29, 1925. She married the love of her life in June of 1943 and celebrated over 50 years of marriage. She started working from the time she was able but mostly enjoyed her last working years at Ken’s Grill in La Grange. It was there she was best known for her fish stew and cabbage. She was the only one who could dip the pot of stew just right.
The time she wasn’t working, she loved to tend her garden and could never get enough of raking leaves. Any one she knew or didn’t was known to her as Fred. Kate always had something cooking in the kitchen and you would never leave her house hungry. Sunday dinners were always full of fresh vegetables like collards and butter beans and the best fried chicken. She was a beloved honorary member of Trinity FWB church in La Grange.
A service to celebrate Katie’s life will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church in La Grange. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in La Grange. Family will fellowship with friends at the cemetery, immediately following the committal service.
She is survived by her son James Alphin and wife Tonya of Lagrange; Judy Alphin Lamb and husband Rick of New Bern; She is also survived by her grandchildren Melissa Smith, Ashley Baker Warwick, Richard Hartley, Joseph Alphin, Jordan Alphin, Alex Greene; 7 Great Grandchildren; 5 Great Great Grandchildren. She was a beloved Wife, Mother, Sister and friend to many and will be missed greatly.
