Hannah Best turned in a first-place time of 23 minutes, 39 seconds, and helped Wayne Country Day edge Wayne Christian and John Paul II in the girls’ CPIC championship cross country meet contested Monday afternoon at Wayne Country Day.

After the meet, Best was named Coastal Plains Independent Conference Runner of the Year.

“It feels good,” Best said about winning runner of the year. “It was hard, though.”

Teammate Gracyn Perry crossed the line fifth in 26:01. Teammates Anne Stuart Freemon (26:50) and Abigail Greiman (26:51) took seventh and eighth, respectively. Gigi Woodlock was 11th overall with a time of 28:14, while Hayden Nielsen (30:32) took 13th.

Hayli Verme led Wayne Christian with a third-place effort of 24:20. Natalie Rheinbruber (27:49) crossed the line ninth. Fellow Eagle Paige Court (28:51) took 12th.

“Hannah has worked hard all year, and she had a goal, and I think she far exceeded her goal,” Wayne Country Day head coach Robert Glass said.

On the boys’ side, Greenfield may have won the meet, but Wayne Country Day had four runners place among the top 10 runners – Shepherd Cowen (sixth, 21:12), Sahil Hogarty (eighth, 21:47), Rigg Kinsey (ninth, 22:41) and Jacob Gribbon (10th, 22:42).

Wayne Country Day wound up in second place, while John Paul II finished third place.

“They all ran awesome,” Glass said. “They ran better than anticipated. They knew they had opportunities, and they didn’t waste them. Nobody ever regressed but progressed, and that’s great.”
