More North Carolina residents will become eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine starting next week.
Governor Roy Cooper announced on Thursday that the state would start inoculating certain persons in Group 4 beginning March 17th.
Gov. Cooper says that include people with medical conditions that put them at higher risk for severe COVID-19 illness as well as people living in some congregate settings that increase their risk of exposure.
The additional members of Group 4 will be eligible for vaccines starting April 7th.
Cooper notes not all providers across the state will be ready to start vaccinating Group 4 on March 17th.
NCDHHS Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen says the federal government now says long-term care facilities can allow responsible indoor visits for residents regardless of vaccination status, with some exceptions.

According to Thursday’s update from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, there have been 879,825 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state since the pandemic began. 11,622 of those cases have resulted in death.
According to Thursday’s map from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, 17,437 people (14.2%) have been at least partially vaccinated in Wayne County and 8,134 (6.6%) have been fully vaccinated.
