Wayne Country Day got its playoff run started on the right foot.
From the opening tip, the Chargers dominated Saint Thomas Moore Academy.
Wayne Country Day (22-2 overall) scored 63 points in the first half during a 74-30 win against the Chancellors in the first round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A boys’ playoffs on Tuesday.
Wayne Country Day won its eighth game in a row and advances to face Harrells Christian Academy (13-8) in the second round on Thursday evening.
The third-seeded Chargers did not waste any time getting started as they started the game off with a 22-4 run.
Wayne Country Day scored 40 points in the first quarter alone, and Saint Thomas Moore struggled throughout the game with the Chargers’ ball pressure.
The Chargers’ scoring slowed down slightly in the second quarter, but the Chancellors were held to just seven points in the second quarter, which enabled the Chargers to take a 63-17 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Wayne Country Day head coach Nathan Faulk was able to rest the starters and used the bench players for the entire second half.
Saint Thomas Moore still did not have an answer for the Chargers, who easily advanced to the second round.
Mike Best scored 21 points for the Chargers, while Dre Ervin scored 12 points. Jaden Cooper scored 10 points. Vante Hutcherson contributed eight points.
