GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A Wayne County Animal Services officer has received statewide recognition for excellence in animal control and public safety.
Wayne County Animal Services Officer John Reece was named the 2026 Animal Control Officer of the Year by the North Carolina Animal and Rabies Control Association (NCARCA) during its 50th Annual Training Conference in Carolina Beach.
The award was presented Tuesday, October 13, during the association’s annual conference luncheon at the Courtyard Marriott.
The Animal Control Officer of the Year Award recognizes field officers who demonstrate outstanding service, professionalism, dedication to public safety, and a commitment to the humane treatment of animals.
Reece’s recognition places the Wayne County officer among the state’s outstanding professionals in animal care and control.
NCARCA presents annual awards to recognize individuals who go above and beyond in protecting animals, serving their communities, and advancing professional standards throughout North Carolina.
In addition to Animal Control Officer of the Year, the association recognizes outstanding contributions in several other categories, including Shelter Personnel of the Year, Support Personnel of the Year, and the Career Service Award, which honors long-term dedication and leadership in the animal care and control profession.
The association’s 50th Annual Training Conference was held October 11–14 in Carolina Beach, bringing together animal control officers, shelter personnel, and other animal welfare professionals from across the state for training and professional development.
Animal control officers play an important role in communities by responding to animal-related complaints, addressing public safety concerns, enforcing animal control regulations, and promoting responsible pet ownership and humane animal treatment.
Reece’s statewide recognition highlights the work of Wayne County Animal Services and the professionals who serve both residents and animals throughout the county.
