MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The University of Mount Olive women’s volleyball team picked up its second consecutive home victory Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Ferrum in straight sets at Kornegay Arena.
The Trojans claimed the match 25-17, 25-23, 28-26, improving to 8-9 overall and 4-5 in Conference Carolinas play.
Olivia Melvin led the Mount Olive attack with a match-high 12 kills. Kaitlyn Koel added nine kills, Kaitlyn Landis finished with eight and Rachel Clark contributed seven kills while hitting .316.
Lyndsay Reid directed the Trojan offense with 34 assists.
Trojans Take Control Early
Mount Olive used a pair of strong service runs to build separation in the opening set.
Kacey Gore delivered three service aces during a 6-0 Trojan run. Mount Olive maintained control from there, with Clark providing kills late in the frame to help secure a 25-17 first-set victory.
Ferrum responded with a strong start in the second set, racing out to an 8-3 advantage.
The Trojans gradually erased the deficit behind Melvin and Clark. Mount Olive still trailed 22-21 late in the set before scoring four of the final five points.
Melvin delivered back-to-back kills during the closing run as the Trojans rallied for a 25-23 victory, taking a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Mount Olive Holds Off Ferrum in Third
Ferrum again put the Trojans under pressure in the third set, building an early four-point lead before Mount Olive battled back.
Neither team was able to pull away during a tight closing stretch.
With the set extended beyond 25 points, Melvin came through with a key kill to put Mount Olive ahead 27-26. Koel followed with the match-winning kill, giving the Trojans a 28-26 victory and completing the straight-set sweep.
Mount Olive finished the afternoon with a .250 hitting percentage, compared with .106 for Ferrum. The Trojans totaled 42 kills, eight service aces and seven team blocks.
Melvin added five digs and a service ace to her 12 kills, while Clark recorded two solo blocks and two block assists.
Gore led Mount Olive defensively with a team-high 18 digs.
Trojans Back Home Saturday
Mount Olive will look to extend its home winning streak when the Trojans return to Kornegay Arena on Saturday, Oct. 3, to host Southern Wesleyan in Conference Carolinas action.
The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
