MOUNT OLIVE, NC — The University of Mount Olive men’s soccer team responded to an early deficit with an offensive explosion Tuesday afternoon, scoring seven unanswered goals to defeat Shaw University 7-1 at Amon Field.
Shaw struck first, finding the back of the net in the opening minute. The early goal did little to slow Mount Olive, as the Trojans took control of the match and dominated the remainder of the contest.
Mount Olive finished with a commanding 27-7 advantage in total shots and a 16-3 edge in shots on goal.
Drew Huff and Kevin Jimenez led the offensive attack with two goals apiece.
Huff put Mount Olive on the board in the 16th minute before adding his second goal during the second half. Jimenez scored twice in the first half, including a goal off an assist from Leon Odongo, helping the Trojans build momentum before halftime.
The offensive pressure continued in the second half.
Haythem Abraham, Zao Cheron and Rami Bayoumi each added a goal as Mount Olive pulled away. Cheron also recorded an assist, while Tristan Sheppert and Pablo Salazar contributed assists on Cheron’s goal.
In all, five different Trojans scored in the victory, highlighting a balanced Mount Olive attack.
Kingston Ouellette earned the win in goal for the Trojans.
Mount Olive will now take its offense on the road, traveling to Ettrick, Virginia, to face Virginia State on Friday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
