AIKEN, S.C. — The University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team generated plenty of offensive opportunities Sunday afternoon but came up short in a 2-0 road loss to USC Aiken at the Pacer Pit.
USC Aiken struck early, scoring in the third minute to take a 1-0 advantage. Mount Olive responded by creating several chances, including shots on goal from Yaneli Sanchez and Malia Acevedo during the opening 16 minutes.
The Trojans finished the first half with six shots, while goalkeeper Anais Coyne made two saves to keep UMO within a goal heading into halftime.
Mount Olive continued to apply pressure in the second half, recording eight more shots. Hannah Spear, Acevedo and Tanya Granholm each put shots on target, while Madyson Brown recorded two attempts, including one on goal.
USC Aiken extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 60th minute. Despite the deficit, the Trojans continued to attack through the final 30 minutes.
Mount Olive finished with 14 total shots, including seven on goal. Coyne played all 90 minutes in net and recorded six saves.
The loss moves the Trojans to 1-1 on the season.
Mount Olive returns home Wednesday, Sept. 2, to host Virginia State at 2 p.m.
