GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Residents across portions of central and eastern North Carolina are being urged to take precautions as dangerous heat and humidity are expected to push heat index values as high as 107 degrees.
A Heat Advisory will be in effect Thursday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. for the southern Piedmont, Sandhills and central and southern Coastal Plain, along with Wake County.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity could make conditions feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature, increasing the risk of heat-related illness for those spending extended periods outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, limit strenuous outdoor activities when possible and spend time in air-conditioned locations. Those who must work or exercise outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas.
Extra attention should also be given to children, older adults and others who may be particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
Motorists are reminded to never leave children or pets unattended inside a vehicle, even for a short period of time. Temperatures inside parked vehicles can quickly become dangerous or deadly.
Outdoor activities should be scheduled for cooler portions of the day when possible. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion, including heavy sweating, dizziness, weakness, nausea or headache, should move to a cooler location and seek appropriate assistance.
The Heat Advisory is scheduled to remain in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday.
