WAYNE COUNTY, NC – North Carolina law enforcement agencies are stepping up enforcement efforts this week as part of the statewide “Speeding Slows You Down” campaign, aimed at reducing crashes and saving lives by encouraging motorists to obey posted speed limits.
The weeklong initiative, coordinated by the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP), began today and will see increased patrols on highways and local roads across the state. Officers will focus on identifying and stopping drivers who are speeding and engaging in other unsafe driving behaviors.
“Speeding is not just a bad habit — it’s a dangerous choice that puts everyone on the road at risk,” said GHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “This campaign reminds drivers that even going a few miles over the speed limit can have devastating outcomes.”
The campaign comes as speed-related crashes continue to claim hundreds of lives each year in North Carolina. According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, nearly 350 people were killed in speed-related crashes across the state in 2025, underscoring the deadly consequences of excessive speed.
Traffic safety officials say speeding reduces a driver’s ability to react to changing road conditions, increases stopping distance, and makes crashes more severe. According to the North Carolina Driver Handbook, a vehicle traveling 55 miles per hour requires more than 200 feet to come to a complete stop, even under ideal weather and road conditions.
The “Speeding Slows You Down” campaign is one of several year-round initiatives led by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program to improve traffic safety through public education, targeted enforcement, and partnerships with law enforcement agencies.
Officials are reminding motorists that slowing down not only helps prevent crashes but also protects everyone sharing North Carolina’s roadways.
