MOUNT OLIVE, NC — Members of VFW Post 9959 gathered Sunday afternoon at Maplewood Cemetery to honor the nation’s fallen service members during a Memorial Day Service filled with remembrance, patriotism and reflection.
The ceremony began at 3 p.m. with welcoming remarks from VFW Post 9959 Commander James Benson, who greeted veterans, families and guests in attendance.
The invocation was delivered by Chaplain Bobby Kornegay of American Legion Post 103 in Mount Olive. Special music was provided by Steve Jones before guest speaker Joshua Young, also a member of VFW Post 9959, addressed the crowd.
One of the ceremony’s most solemn moments came during the laying of the wreath by Commander Benson and Auxiliary President Violet Saviak. The American flag was then lowered to half-staff as “Taps” was played in tribute to those who gave their lives in military service.
Chaplain Kornegay concluded the service with the benediction.
The annual Memorial Day observance served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and the importance of honoring their legacy.
