GOLDSBORO, NC – A piece of Goldsboro High School history is now permanently cemented in Cougar lore.
During Friday night’s Alumni Basketball Game, Goldsboro High School officially retired jersey No. 52 worn by former Cougar standout and Super Bowl champion Jarran Reed. The emotional halftime ceremony honored Reed’s accomplishments on and off the field, ensuring no future Goldsboro athlete will ever wear the number again.
The celebration brought together alumni, students, coaches, family members and community supporters to recognize one of the school’s most accomplished athletes.
Goldsboro High School coach — and Reed’s brother — shared his excitement leading into the ceremony, calling it “a great day in Cougar Land.”
“As a coach of THE GOLDSBORO HIGH SCHOOL and as your BIG BROTHER, I’m overly excited to announce we will retire Jarran Reed’s high school jersey this weekend,” he said prior to the event. “#52 will never be worn again by an athlete at THE GOLDSBORO HIGH SCHOOL. This is beautiful and I’m thankful to be a part of it.”
The coach also encouraged the community to “pack the gym” for what he described as one of the greatest weekends in school history.
Reed, who rose from Goldsboro High School to become a standout college and professional football player, has consistently credited his hometown and mentors for shaping the person he became. In a recent interview, Reed reflected on growing up in Goldsboro and learning what he called “real football, football” — playing for the love of the game and for the people around him.
He specifically thanked mentors and coaches including Charles Lane, Coach Robbie Jones and Coach Brown, along with many others who invested in his future and believed in his potential.
Friday’s jersey retirement ceremony served not only as a recognition of Reed’s athletic success, but also as a tribute to his lasting impact on the Goldsboro community and the pride he continues to bring to Cougar Nation.
“Once a Cougar, always a Cougar.”
