March 1, 2026, 84, Carriere, MS – Richard Anthony Young, 84, of Carriere, Mississippi, passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, March 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 25, 1941, in Durham, North Carolina to the late Marvin Pleasant Young and Nellie Swicegood Young. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou Hess Young; sisters, Eleanor (David) Barden, Helen Young, Sylvia (Cecil) Pittman and Jean (Mack) Pike; brothers, Marvin (Joan) Young, and Bill (Inez) Young.
During his 35-year career, he worked as a seagoing oceanographer for the Naval Oceanographic Office at NASA Stennis Space Center. Richard worked on worldwide advanced marine science projects and the development and testing of deepwater ocean equipment. He was highly respected by the US Naval Operational Oceanography Officers. Richard’s work impacted the security and safety of the United States. Along with cherishing spending time with his family, he loved cooking, traveling, boating, hiking, and many other outdoor activities. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Picayune. Richard will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Ann Y. Wolf and husband, Terry of Rancho Murieta, CA; Sarah Y. Frierson and husband, James of Carriere, MS, and Katie Y. Hansen of Madison, MS; grandchildren, Alyssa F. Crabtree and husband Cody, Neil Frierson, and Mathis Tinsley; great grandchildren, Emerson Crabtree and Stetson Crabtree; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation and memorial services were held March 14, 2026, at First United Methodist Church of Picayune, Mississippi.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 11:00 am at Princeton United Methodist Church with the Reverend William Sander officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 11:00 am prior to the service at the church.
A Committal Service will be held at Princeton Cemetery immediately after the Memorial Service.

This ministry was near and dear to Richard’s heart. It provides a bag of food to hundreds of needy children in Pearl River County on the weekends during the school year.
