May 11, 2026, 65, Goldsboro – Thaddeus Swindell “Teddy” Best Jr., 65, departed this life on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Born on January 22, 1961, in Wayne County, North Carolina, Teddy was the beloved son of the late Thaddeus Swindell Best Sr. and Dorothy Branch Best.
Teddy lived a life marked by hard work, determination, and a personality that could never be forgotten. Throughout his career, he faithfully served his community as a former police officer in Stantonsburg, North Carolina. He also worked with the sheriff’s office and within the prison system, carrying out his duties with strength and dedication. Beyond law enforcement, Teddy was a skilled automobile body repairman whose hands could restore more than just vehicles — he took pride in fixing things and helping others whenever he could.
Known affectionately by family and friends as “Teddy,” he possessed a fiery spirit and unforgettable sense of humor. As the baby of the family, he never hesitated to tell everyone else what to do. His feisty nature, strong opinions, and outspoken personality brought laughter, stories, and memorable moments that those who loved him will cherish forever. Beneath his tough exterior was a man who deeply cared for his family and those closest to him.
In addition to his parents, Teddy was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Audrey Faye Harris.
Though his earthly journey has ended, his memory will forever linger in the hearts of those who loved him most: his sister, Hazel Best-Shaw; stepmother, Helen Best; stepbrother, Julian Smith; nephews, Jason Harris (Latoya) and Barrymore Shaw Jr. (Caitlynn); great-nieces, Kayla and Addison; great-nephew, Harper; bonus siblings, Toni Ward-Hamilton (Levi III), Charlenna Bennett-Carter (Ed), Charles Jacobs Jr., Nina Jacobs, and Maurice Jacobs (Shonise); special cousin, John Sherman Best; along with a host of other loving relatives and dear friends who will continue to honor his life and legacy.
A service to celebrate Teddy’s life will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. Public viewing will take place one hour prior to the service.
Though Teddy may no longer walk beside us, the love, laughter, and lasting memories he gave so freely will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
