GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Goldsboro Police Department announced Friday that a second juvenile suspect has been taken into custody in connection to the fatal shooting of a Smithfield man earlier this month.
According to investigators, the 16-year-old suspect was arrested without incident on May 15 and is currently being held pending his first court appearance. Authorities previously secured a warrant charging the teen with one count of murder.
The arrest is connected to the May 7 shooting death of Edward Duncan Jr., 42, of Smithfield.
Police said officers were dispatched around 8:38 p.m. to the 100 block of Vanderbilt Circle after receiving a ShotSpotter alert. While officers were en route, additional information indicated that someone had been shot.
When officers arrived, they located Duncan suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to UNC Health Wayne, where he later died from his injuries.
The department’s Investigative Services Bureau launched an investigation and later identified both a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old as suspects in the case.
Investigators initially went to Goldsboro High School after receiving information that the 16-year-old suspect was attending class there. The school was briefly placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, but authorities later determined the suspect had already left campus before investigators arrived. The lockdown was lifted once officials confirmed there was no threat to students or staff.
The 12-year-old suspect was later located at a residence in Goldsboro and taken into custody without incident. The juvenile was charged with one count each of murder, larceny of a firearm, and possession of a stolen firearm before being transported to a juvenile detention facility.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
