Wayne County, N.C. — The Phi Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated was recognized Monday evening at the North Carolina State Capitol in Raleigh for its dedication to volunteerism and mentorship in Wayne County.
The chapter received recognition through the Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards program, presented by the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. The ceremony honored volunteers and organizations representing twenty-three counties across the state.
Attendees at the May 11 event had the opportunity to take photos with Josh Stein following the ceremony, which also included refreshments and a celebration of community service efforts statewide. Roderick White was also in attendance to congratulate the chapter for its impact in the community.
The Phi Alpha Alpha Chapter was specifically recognized for its Fatherhood and Mentoring Program at North Drive Elementary School. Members of the fraternity have volunteered at the school every Thursday morning for the past two years, contributing more than 480 hours of service.
Through the program, fraternity members provide mentorship, literacy support, encouragement, and positive male role models for second-grade male students. The chapter also participates in school events, family engagement activities, student recognition programs, and summer enrichment opportunities.
“Yesterday was truly a special moment to witness,” said Shonise Jacobs. “Seeing the brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., recognized by Governor Josh Stein for their unwavering support of North Drive Elementary was both meaningful and well deserved. This organization has become part of the fabric of our school community. Their mentorship, encouragement, and commitment continue to make a lasting impact on our students each day.”
Established in 1979, the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award honors individuals and organizations across North Carolina for exceptional dedication and service to their communities.
