WAYNE COUNTY, NC – Wayne County Veterans & Patriots Coalition Inc. is inviting the community to join in honoring Wayne County’s fallen service members during several Memorial Day weekend ceremonies planned across the area.
The annual observances will begin Saturday, May 23, with the organization’s “Flags In” Ceremony at American Legion Post 11, located at 2973 U.S. Highway 117 South in Dudley.
A light breakfast featuring biscuits, doughnuts, and coffee will be served beginning at 8 a.m. A memorial tribute honoring fallen warriors will follow at 9 a.m., along with flag distribution to team leaders.
Following the ceremony, volunteer teams will depart to place flags at several local cemeteries, including Wayne Memorial Park, Wayne Memorial Park North, Elmwood, Willowdale, and Evergreen cemeteries.
The weekend observances will conclude Monday, May 25, with the National Moment of Silence Ceremony at 2:30 p.m. at the Wayne County Veterans Memorial on East Walnut Street in Goldsboro.
Special guests for the ceremony will include James and Christina Kazakavage, Gold Star parents of Technical Sergeant Adam K. Ginnet, who was killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom on Jan. 19, 2010.
A wreath-laying ceremony at the Wayne County Courthouse Doughboy Statue will immediately follow the National Moment of Silence observance.
Organizers say the events are an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance and gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the nation.
