May 3, 2026, 78, Kenly – Vernon Lasley Parrish, 78, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Born in Wilson County on September 4, 1947, he was the son of the late Raymond “Lack” Parrish and Bertie Mae “Cindy” Barnes.
In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Lee Parrish; and sister, Rose.
Vernon is survived by his two sons, Justin Parrish and Vernon Parrish, Jr.
Vernon dedicated many years of his professional life to Merck, where he worked in quality control until his retirement. Known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail, he took great pride in his role and the relationships he built along the way. Even in retirement, Vernon remained active in his community, serving as an assistant at Minshew-Coley (Kenly Funeral Service.) In that role, he became a familiar and comforting presence, always ready to strike up a conversation and bring a smile to those around him.
A proud veteran, Vernon served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His service was a meaningful part of his life, and he continued that connection as a member of the American Legion in Wilson County, where he enjoyed fellowship with fellow veterans.
Vernon had a deep love for cooking and found great joy in preparing meals for family and friends. His kitchen was a place of warmth, laughter, and togetherness. He cherished time spent with others, whether sharing a meal, telling stories, or simply enjoying good conversation.
A graveside service to celebrate Vernon’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Wilson at 2 p.m. with Pastor Darrell Hooker presiding.
