GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Community leaders and residents gathered in Goldsboro to celebrate the spirit of service as this year’s Governor’s Volunteer Service Award recipients were recognized for their dedication to Wayne County.
United Way of Wayne County announced that all local nominees for the 2026 awards were officially accepted by the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, highlighting an exceptional group of individuals and organizations committed to making a difference.
This year’s honorees include Grace Dybdahl, Fritz Knack, Barbara Wagner, Buddy Scott, Phil Waters, and the Phi Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.. Each was recognized for their passion, generosity, and lasting contributions to the community.
Among the group, the Phi Alpha Alpha Chapter earned Wayne County’s Governor’s Medallion Award — the highest level of volunteer service recognition in North Carolina. The chapter will be honored at the State Capitol in Raleigh this May alongside other top recipients from across the state. The Medallion Award recognizes individuals and groups whose service has created a significant and enduring impact.
The local celebration, titled “A Night Full of Heroes,” took place April 27 at the Paramount Theatre, where community members gathered to honor the awardees. The event featured Vice Chair Ken Derksen as emcee, with presentations from local leaders including Col. Donberg, Commissioner Daughtery, Mayor Gaylor, and Board Chair Selena Worrell. Becky Craig delivered the keynote address.
Organizers also extended thanks to the Paramount Theatre staff, David Weil, and the Paramount Theatre Foundation for their continued partnership, as well as volunteers and supporters including Tara Humphries and personnel from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base who helped coordinate participation.
The Governor’s Volunteer Service Award program recognizes the vital role volunteers play in strengthening communities across North Carolina. In Wayne County, leaders say this year’s honorees exemplify the power of service and the impact of giving back.
