GOLDSBORO, N.C. — UNC Health Wayne is ramping up efforts to recruit and retain healthcare workers through expanded education partnerships, financial incentives, and ongoing facility improvements, according to a hospital representative.
Scott Smith, a senior talent acquisition specialist with UNC Health Wayne, said the organization is working with local colleges to create pathways for students pursuing nursing careers. The hospital partners with institutions such as Wayne Community College and others to help certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) advance their education to become registered nurses (RNs).
“We’re doing everything we can to partner with colleges and bring students into the hospital, then help them transition into full-time careers,” Smith said. “We’re also able to assist financially, which benefits both the students and our community.”
One of the key initiatives is the RN Apprentice program, which allows participants to gain hands-on experience while continuing their education. Interested applicants can apply through the UNC Health Wayne website, where submissions are reviewed and coordinated with the hospital’s learning and development team.
In addition, UNC Health Wayne recently launched its Nursing Scholars Program in partnership with universities including the University of Mount Olive, East Carolina University, and Barton College. The program offers up to $40,000 in tuition reimbursement for students pursuing Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees. Payments are distributed monthly to help offset student loan costs in exchange for a work commitment with the hospital.
Smith said the hospital is also working to expand the program to additional schools, including Fayetteville State University, UNC Wilmington, and Campbell University.
For new graduates entering the workforce, UNC Health Wayne is offering a $15,000 incentive, paid out over three years, to support those beginning their nursing careers. Smith emphasized the hospital’s goal of providing competitive wages comparable to larger markets while maintaining a community-focused environment.
Beyond staffing initiatives, UNC Health Wayne is investing in infrastructure upgrades. The hospital is currently renovating patient tower floors, with one floor already completed featuring modernized rooms and updated technology, including smart boards replacing traditional whiteboards. Renovations are expected to continue over the next several years.
Smith said the improvements reflect the organization’s broader mission of enhancing patient care and workplace culture.
“It starts with our people,” Smith said. “If we take care of each other, we’ll take better care of our patients.”
