MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The Arts Council of Wayne County (ACWC) has been recognized for its lasting impact on the community, receiving the Moses E. King Contributions to the Community Award at the 2025 Mt. Olive Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet.
The honor highlights the organization’s 63-year legacy as well as its focused, three-year effort to more deeply integrate its mission within the Town of Mount Olive.
Under its current leadership, the ACWC has expanded beyond its traditional role as a resource centered in Goldsboro, establishing itself as a growing creative force in Mount Olive. A key part of that transformation is The Artist Group of Mt. Olive — a collective of five resident artists who serve as educators, entrepreneurs, and leaders in revitalizing the downtown area.
Lauren Saeger, Manager of the Steele Memorial Library and a Chamber board member, praised the organization’s long-standing commitment to the community. She noted that in just the past two years, the ACWC has distributed nearly $15,000 in grants supporting initiatives such as the Mt. Olive Downtown Development Corporation, the North Carolina Pickle Festival, and the University of Mount Olive.
“Through decades of funding, partnerships, and service, this organization creates an engaging, vibrant, and strong Mount Olive,” Saeger said.
The council’s influence can be seen throughout the town, from public art installations like the Trojan mural to the development of artist-in-residence spaces downtown. These efforts have not only enhanced the town’s cultural identity but have also contributed to economic growth by attracting visitors and supporting local businesses.
ACWC Executive Director Anna Hinson said the recognition came as a surprise but reflects the organization’s commitment to the community.
“I looked up to so many leaders in that room. I never dreamed — although the organization is well deserving — we would be a recipient,” Hinson said. “Our goal is to ensure Mount Olive residents know this Council belongs to them too. We are building a family here, and we are here to stay.”
