GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A suspect is in custody following an early morning shooting, police standoff, and house fire Wednesday on Shelley Drive, according to the Goldsboro Police Department.
Officers responded to a reported breaking and entering in progress around 5:38 a.m. on April 15 at a residence located at 1104 Shelley Drive. When officers arrived, they encountered a chaotic scene as a female resident fled through the garage while being chased by a male suspect.
Police say the suspect shot the resident as she attempted to escape. The woman was transported to UNC Health Wayne with non-life-threatening injuries.
As the suspect continued firing, officers returned fire, potentially striking the suspect. The man then fled back inside the residence.
Authorities quickly secured the perimeter and called for additional assistance. Emergency response teams from Wayne, Johnston, Lenoir, and Greene counties responded to support the Goldsboro Police Department.
A crisis negotiation team attempted to establish communication with the suspect. During a search of the home using robotic equipment, authorities observed evidence of an assault that had taken place inside the residence.
Officials then deployed gas in an attempt to force the suspect out. After the suspect refused to exit, gas was deployed a second time. Following the second deployment, a fire broke out in the bedroom where the suspect was believed to be hiding.
The fire became extensive, prompting a response from five units with the Goldsboro Fire Department. Fire crews were able to bring the blaze under control and remained on scene working to extinguish remaining hot spots.
The suspect was ultimately taken into custody.
Authorities say the case is being investigated as attempted murder and arson. Officials note the investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released later today.
