GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Forecasters are warning residents across central North Carolina, including Wayne County, to prepare for the possibility of severe weather as a strong storm system moves through the region.
According to the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms could develop Sunday evening and continue into the overnight hours. The strongest storms may produce localized damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado.
The threat is expected to increase on Monday as a powerful cold front moves across the area.
Meteorologists say widespread thunderstorms are likely Monday, with damaging wind gusts posing the primary threat. A few tornadoes will also be possible as the system moves through the region.
The greatest risk area includes the eastern Piedmont stretching across the Sandhills and the Coastal Plain, which includes communities in eastern North Carolina.
Even outside of thunderstorms, strong winds are expected throughout the day Monday. Forecasts indicate wind gusts could reach around 40 mph, potentially causing hazardous driving conditions and isolated power outages.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware, monitor updated forecasts, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts as conditions develop.
