ETTRICK, Va. — The University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team kept Virginia State off the scoreboard for more than 75 minutes Wednesday evening, but a late goal proved to be the difference as the Trojans suffered a 1-0 road loss.
Virginia State, the defending 2025 USCAA National Champion, broke the scoreless tie in the 76th minute when Loryn Sturgis found the back of the net for the match’s only goal.
Mount Olive goalkeeper Anais Coyne delivered a strong performance between the posts, playing all 90 minutes and recording three saves while surrendering just one goal.
The Trojans created several scoring opportunities of their own.
Emma Harnage and Charlotte Benson led Mount Olive with three shots apiece. Benson placed two attempts on goal, while Harnage recorded one shot on frame.
Yaneli Sanchez added two shots, while Madyson Brown contributed another attempt for the Trojans.
Despite the loss, Mount Olive’s defense kept the defending national champions scoreless for the first 75 minutes before Virginia State finally broke through.
The loss drops Mount Olive to 1-2 on the season, while Virginia State improves to 2-0.
The Trojans will return home Saturday, Sept. 5, to open conference play against UNC Pembroke. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
