GOLDSBORO, N.C. — One of the most exciting milestones for families is approaching as Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) prepares to welcome rising kindergartners to their future schools this week.
On Friday, March 13, children who will enter kindergarten this fall will have the opportunity to visit their assigned elementary school between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. During the visit, students can explore their new classrooms, meet future teachers and begin getting comfortable with their school environment ahead of the upcoming academic year.
The event also gives families a chance to make sure they have everything needed to complete the enrollment process.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to begin registration online through the district’s website. There, families can enroll their child, search their home address to confirm which school their child is assigned to attend, review enrollment checklists and watch a special kindergarten registration video.
In addition to online registration, families may also pick up paper enrollment checklists and registration packets at any WCPS elementary school.
To enroll in kindergarten for the upcoming school year, a child must be five years old on or before Aug. 31.
Parents or legal guardians must provide several required documents during registration, including:
-
An official birth certificate
-
The child’s immunization records
-
A photo ID for the enrolling adult
Birth certificates can be obtained through the Register of Deeds office in the county where the child was born.
Families must also provide two forms of proof of residence, such as a utility bill, tax bill, deed of trust, rent receipt or another document confirming the current address. Military families living on base may provide a letter from base housing as proof of residence.
Parents must enroll their child in the school district where they currently reside.
North Carolina law also requires every kindergarten student to receive a health assessment and required immunizations. The health assessment must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form, which is available through the school district, the Wayne County Health Department and most pediatricians’ offices.
If families do not already have the form completed, they will receive one during registration that must be filled out by a physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes on Monday, Aug. 24.
School officials say the visit is designed to help students feel confident and excited as they prepare to start their educational journey.
