PIKEVILLE, N.C. — Residents in Pikeville can soon look forward to a new playground designed for children of all ages after the town’s Board of Commissioners approved plans to install new equipment at Dees Memorial Park.
Following several months of discussion, commissioners voted to move forward with the project, which will feature play areas tailored to different age groups. Half of the playground will be designed for children ages 2 to 5, while the other half will serve children ages 5 to 12, providing ample space for families to enjoy the park together.
Town leaders said the new playground will include a firm, rubberized surface to help ensure accessibility for all children and caregivers.
The project is expected to cost just over $300,000. Funding will come from remaining funds from a legislative grant the town received in 2023, along with money from the town’s fund balance.
Town officials said the investment reflects a long-term commitment to improving community spaces for residents.
Over the past four years, the town has worked to reduce wasteful spending while making strategic investments in the community, efforts that helped make the playground project possible.
Construction is expected to begin soon, with the playground anticipated to be completed by mid-summer this year.
