GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Wayne County has announced its Top Five Nominees for the 2026 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award, recognizing individuals and organizations whose dedication and leadership have made a lasting impact on the local community.
Selected by a local review committee, the nominees will now advance for statewide consideration by the NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.
Among this year’s nominees:
Barbara Wagner has spent 17 years leading the Society of St. Vincent de Paul food pantry ministry. She organizes weekly food distributions and coordinates special holiday and personal care outreach efforts, serving families facing food insecurity across Wayne County.
Buddy Scott and Phil Waters have served as volunteer general contractors for Cry Freedom Missions’ Magnolia House. Donating their professional expertise and countless hours, the pair helped renovate and create a safe, stable home for women transitioning from recovery programs.
Fritz Knack, a longtime civic leader, provides strategic leadership across multiple organizations, including the Arts Council of Wayne County. His work promotes cultural vitality, economic equity, and support for military families throughout the region.
Grace Dybdahl, founder and president of the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Airman Dorm Council, has mobilized volunteers, led fundraising efforts, and championed initiatives that strengthen connection and resiliency among service members and their families at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
The Phi Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated has also been nominated for its consistent weekly mentoring at North Drive Elementary School, where members serve as positive male role models, strengthen literacy skills, and foster confidence among second-grade students.
The Top Five Nominees will be formally submitted for final consideration at the state level. Upon confirmation, Wayne County will recognize these honorees — along with all local nominees — during the “A Night Full of Heroes” Volunteer Ceremony on April 27 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.
The Governor’s Volunteer Service Award honors individuals and groups whose volunteer efforts create meaningful, lasting change. Wayne County leaders say this year’s nominees embody the spirit of service that strengthens the entire community.
