GOLDSBORO, N.C. — The Wayne County ABC Board presented a $121,500 distribution check to Wayne County officials this week, continuing its longstanding financial support of local government and community programs.
ABC Board Chairman and General Manager Darnay Barefoot made the presentation, noting that business operations remain strong and that the board is preparing to open a new retail location in the Rosewood area.
“We’re glad we can support Wayne County,” Barefoot said during the meeting. He also invited residents to visit ABC stores and facilities to learn more about operations, adding that “the doors are always open.”
Expansion and Improvements Underway
In addition to the upcoming Rosewood store opening, Barefoot provided an update on construction at the board’s facility in the county’s industrial park. The project includes a new warehouse and expanded office space.
While recent weather has slowed progress, Barefoot said the improvements reflect significant growth over the past three years.
“We’ve come a long way,” he said.
90 Years of ABC in North Carolina
This year marks the 90th anniversary of ABC systems statewide in North Carolina. The Wayne County ABC Board has operated locally since 1964.
Barefoot emphasized the board’s financial model and community contributions, addressing a common misconception about funding.
“It’s not funded by any tax money,” he said. “We have to self-support ourselves, pay our bills, and make sure the distributions are passed out.”
Revenue generated through ABC sales helps fund distributions to the county, supports local law enforcement initiatives, drug and alcohol education programs, and contributes tax revenue, including bottle taxes.
