February 3, 2026, 72, Kenly – Iris Dean Massey, 72, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born on January 10, 1954, she was the daughter of the Iris Dean and the late William H. Dean.
In addition to her father, Iris was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Massey.
In addition to her mother, Iris is survived by her daughter, Iris Shannon Woodall (Ben) of Kenly; grandchildren, Hailey Cleleste Woodall, William Cole Woodall, and Kylie Boyette; brother, William Danny Dean (Dottie) of Sanford and; nephew, Taylor Dean (Danielle); and son-in-love, Matt Wheeler.
Iris devoted many years of her life to working in the school system, a career she truly loved. She often spoke of the joy the children brought into her life and took great pride in being a part of their daily lives. Her work was more than a job; it was a calling that reflected her caring and giving nature.
Outside of her career, Iris had a deep love for animals and never hesitated to open her home and heart to a dog in need. She also found peace and happiness working in her yard, taking great pride in the beauty she created through her hard work and care.
Known for her wonderful sense of humor, Iris loved to joke and laugh, and she carried that joyful spirit with her throughout her life. She will be fondly remembered for her kind heart, her devotion to her family, and the warmth and love she shared with everyone she met.
A service to celebrate Iris’ life will be held on Monday, February 9, 2026 at 2 pm at Kenly Funeral Service. Interment will be held at Kenly Cemetery following the service. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 1 pm until 2 pm at the funeral home.
