MOUNT OLIVE, NC — The University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team battled Converse to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon at Amon Field, earning another point in Conference Carolinas play.
Battling steady winds of around 13 mph throughout the match, the Trojans (4-3-3, 2-0-3 Conference Carolinas) controlled much of the offensive action, outshooting the Valkyries 15-10 and holding 55 percent of the possession.
Mount Olive generated six shots in the opening half before increasing the pressure with nine attempts after halftime. Converse goalkeeper Sofia Casares Herrasti, however, stopped all five UMO shots on goal to keep the Trojans off the scoreboard.
Senior goalkeeper Anais Coyne delivered a strong performance on the other end of the field, recording eight saves to secure her third clean sheet of the season. Six of those saves came in the second half as Converse increased its offensive pressure.
Malia Acevedo led the Trojans with a match-high five shots, while Charlotte Benson added three attempts. Emma Harnage, Emma O’Rourke and Jada Turner each put shots on frame during the second half.
Converse mounted a late push for the game-winning goal, but Coyne came through with saves in the 82nd and 90th minutes to preserve the 0-0 draw and secure a conference point for Mount Olive.
The Trojans remain unbeaten through their first five Conference Carolinas matches at 2-0-3.
Mount Olive returns to conference action next week with a road trip to Wilson to face rival Barton. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
