WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — Wayne County officials have announced multiple facility closures and declared a local State of Emergency as preparations continue for projected winter weather expected to impact the area on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The following schedule changes will be in effect on Saturday:
-
The Peggy M. Seegars Senior Center will be closed.
-
All branches of the Wayne County Public Library will be closed.
-
The Wayne County Landfill and all convenience sites will be closed.
County officials say the closures are being made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of both staff and the public as weather conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout the day.
According to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service in Raleigh, 4 to 8 inches of snow are possible across much of central North Carolina. Wind gusts of 25 to 35 miles per hour could lead to reduced visibility and blowing and drifting snow. A prolonged period of dangerously cold temperatures is also expected this weekend, with wind chills in the single digits.
In coordination with the Governor’s State of Emergency, Wayne County has signed a local State of Emergency, effective immediately. While no restrictions are currently in place, the declaration allows the county and its municipalities to respond more efficiently through emergency funding reimbursement, resource coordination, and the ability to request additional assets if needed. The declaration applies to all municipalities within Wayne County, with the consent and request of each mayor.
The Wayne County Office of Emergency Services continues to monitor weather conditions closely and is coordinating with local and state partners to prepare for potential impacts.
