WAYNE COUNTY, NC – A second round of winter weather is expected to move into central North Carolina beginning Friday, with Wayne County likely to be impacted by heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures through the weekend.
The U.S. National Weather Service in Raleigh is forecasting a winter storm that could bring 5 to 8 inches of snow to Wayne County, along with wind gusts of 25 to 35 miles per hour. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon for all of central North Carolina. An Extreme Cold Watch is also in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday morning.
“With a second round of winter weather likely starting Friday, we’re asking people to prepare now so they’re ready to stay off the roads once the storm arrives,” said State Transportation Secretary Daniel Johnson. “Our crews have been working around the clock this week clearing roads, and we’re now turning our attention back to preparations for more winter weather. We appreciated everyone doing their best to keep off the roads last weekend, and we need that same focus again with this storm.”
Forecasters say confidence continues to increase for measurable snow from Friday night into Sunday morning, though uncertainty remains regarding exact totals and impacts. In addition to snowfall, Arctic air will move into the region, producing wind chills in the single digits to teens, with sub-zero wind chills possible Saturday night. Temperatures are expected to remain well below normal through Monday.
The combination of heavy snow and strong winds could down trees and power lines, leading to sporadic power outages. Travel conditions may become hazardous or impossible at times, particularly as roadways become snow-covered and icy.
Emergency officials urge residents to complete preparations now, including stocking emergency supplies for homes and vehicles, planning for potential power outages, and checking on neighbors—especially seniors. Pet owners are encouraged to bring animals indoors or ensure they have warm, adequate shelter.
