WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is asking for the public’s help in identifying the owner of a handgun recovered during a collision investigation in Wayne County.
Troopers responded to a vehicle crash on September 10, 2023. While conducting the investigation, officers located a firearm inside the vehicle. The driver and all passengers denied ownership of the weapon.
According to the Highway Patrol, a check of the firearm’s serial number revealed it had not been reported stolen to any law enforcement agency. The weapon was identified as a black 9mm polymer pistol and was seized by troopers.
Under North Carolina General Statute 15-11.2, unclaimed firearms are subject to disposal after 30 days. Authorities say the weapon will be disposed of if no lawful owner comes forward within the required timeframe.
Anyone who believes they may be the lawful owner of the firearm is asked to contact the North Carolina State Highway Patrol office in Wayne County.
