October 30, 2026, 90, – Doris Elizabeth Jones Sutton, 90, passed away Friday, October 30, 2026. Doris was born in Wayne County to the late Bertha Kelly and Daniel Jones Sr. on June 19, 1936.
Doris was a woman of great faith, unwavering strength, and deep love. From a young age, shefaced some of life’s hardest challenges and was forced to make some of its most difficult decisions. After losing the love of her life, JW, while her children were still young, she made the choice to find the strength to pick up the pieces and complete her nursing education, so she could continue providing for her children. Not too many years later, she suffered the loss of her daughter, Linda, and once again made the choice to remain a steady foundation for her surviving child. She continued working, providing, and raising him into a man who was loved and adored by so many. Many years later, she was faced with another sudden heartbreak when her son, Johnny, passed away. Even then, she made the choice to continue doing everything within her power to care for her grandchildren for as long as she was able. Eventually, that decision was no longer hers to make and her grandchildren were given the privilege of finally being able to take care of the woman who had spent so much of her life caring for them.
Through every heartbreak and hardship, Doris chose to lean on God. Her faith gave her the strength to face what seemed impossible and keep moving forward when life gave her every reason to give up. She taught her grandchildren that with a little bit of faith and a whole lot of hard work, anything is possible. Doris will be remembered for the courageous, faithful, and good steward of life that she was. Her love, strength, and example will live on through the generations she leaves behind. She will be missed more than words could ever express.
Doris is survived by her grandsons Jonathan Michael Sutton and wife Lindsey Newman Sutton and Blake Daniel Sutton and wife Katie Gurley Sutton; granddaughter Holly Elizabeth Jackson and husband Steven Luke Jackson; great grandsons Michael Joseph Sutton, Lucas Grey Sutton, Ayden Blake Sutton and John Luke Jackson; great granddaughter Avery Kate Sutton; sister Faye Whitman; several nieces and nephews; and many friends who were like family. In addition to her father, Daniel Jones Sr., and mother, Bertha Kelly, she was preceded in death by her husband John “JW” Whitfield Sutton Sr.; her daughter Linda Gail Sutton; her son John “Johnny” Whitfield Sutton Jr.; her sisters Margaret Williams and Gracie Kelly; and her brothers Daniel “DJ” Jones Jr, James Jones, and Donald Jones.
A graveside service to honor Doris will be held on Tuesday November 3, 2026 at 10:00 am at Wayne Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St Jude’s Children’s hospital in Doris’ name, which is where Doris would tithe her money monthly, or to the Alzheimer’s Association in Doris’ name.
