MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The North Carolina Pickle Festival took its 40th anniversary celebration to the high seas this fall, bringing pickle enthusiasts together aboard Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas for the inaugural Pickle Cruise.
The special anniversary sailing extended the spirit of Mount Olive’s beloved annual festival beyond Wayne County, giving longtime supporters and new friends an opportunity to celebrate four decades of pickle-themed traditions while enjoying a weekend at sea.
Guests traveled from across the Southeast and beyond to take part in the celebration, including participants from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The cruise even attracted international guests from France.
The milestone celebration also caught the attention of international media. A French video journalist and photographer based in Paris traveled to document the Pickle Cruise and the community behind the North Carolina Pickle Festival.
The coverage will be featured as part of a video series exploring unique American festivals and traditions through a European perspective, bringing Mount Olive’s pickle-loving culture to an international audience.
The sailing, serviced by Mallory Dumond, a travel agent with Travelmation, also included an unexpected romantic milestone.
A couple traveling from Georgia became engaged during the cruise, adding a special moment to the anniversary festivities.
Throughout the voyage, guests enjoyed pickle-themed activities, festival traditions and opportunities to make new friendships, highlighting the community spirit that has helped the North Carolina Pickle Festival thrive for four decades.
The inaugural Pickle Cruise marked a unique chapter in the festival’s history, taking a celebration rooted in the small town of Mount Olive to an international setting.
The North Carolina Pickle Festival is held annually in April in downtown Mount Olive, celebrating the region’s pickle industry with food, live entertainment, family-friendly activities and, of course, plenty of pickles.
After 40 years, the festival continues to bring people together, proving that Mount Olive’s love of pickles extends far beyond Wayne County — and now, even onto the open seas.
