MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The Town of Mount Olive is notifying residents that smoke testing of the town’s sanitary sewer system will take place beginning Monday, October 12, and continue through Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
According to town officials, all areas of Mount Olive will be included in the testing, which is designed to identify potential problems within the sanitary sewer system.
The primary purpose of smoke testing is to locate leaks, breaks, and illegal connections in sewer lines. These issues, if left unaddressed, can contribute to unpleasant odors, potential health hazards, and structural damage.
What Residents Can Expect
During the testing process, residents may notice smoke coming from various locations throughout town. Officials emphasize that the smoke used during the testing is harmless to people, pets, and plants.
The smoke is typically white or yellowish-white and does not leave stains or residue.
Residents may observe smoke coming from building vents, gutters, downspouts, or manholes as crews evaluate the sewer system.
If smoke enters a home or building, it generally indicates a possible plumbing defect. Town officials advise that correcting plumbing issues on private property is the responsibility of the homeowner or property owner.
The smoke may also produce a slight, distinctive odor, although it is generally not considered unpleasant.
Town Encourages Public Awareness
The Town of Mount Olive is encouraging residents to be aware of the testing schedule and not be alarmed if they notice smoke coming from sewer-related openings or ventilation systems during the testing period.
The testing is part of efforts to identify potential problems within the sanitary sewer infrastructure and help maintain the system’s proper operation.
To ensure residents are informed, the town has also issued notices in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.
Residents with questions or concerns about the smoke testing may contact the Town of Mount Olive at 919-658-9539.
The smoke testing is scheduled to continue through October 28, 2026, with all areas of town included.
