MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Virginia State on Saturday afternoon at Amon Field, despite outshooting the visitors and creating several scoring opportunities.
Virginia State (4-1-1) struck early in the contest when Erica Mathews scored an unassisted goal in the 14th minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage they would carry into halftime.
Mount Olive (2-3-2) continued to apply offensive pressure throughout the second half, but the Trojans were unable to find the equalizer.
The Trojans finished with 16 shots, including six on goal, while Virginia State recorded 10 shots, with three on target. Mount Olive also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Yaneli Sanchez and Elie Lopez led the Trojans’ offensive efforts with three shots apiece. Emma Harnage, Malia Acevedo, Rebecca Witkiewicz, and Madyson Brown each contributed multiple shot attempts as Mount Olive worked to break through Virginia State’s defense.
In goal, Kendall Hackworth recorded two saves for Mount Olive, while Virginia State goalkeeper Ava Patterson made six saves to preserve the shutout.
Despite generating more scoring opportunities, the Trojans were unable to capitalize as Virginia State held on for the one-goal victory.
