FERRUM, Va. — The University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team used a dominant offensive performance and a strong defensive effort to earn a 2-0 road victory over Ferrum on Wednesday evening at Penn-Roediger Field.
The Trojans improved to 2-2-2 overall and 1-0-2 in conference play, while Ferrum fell to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in league action.
Mount Olive controlled the offensive pressure throughout the match, finishing with 27 shots, including 12 on goal, while limiting the Panthers to just five shots and three attempts on target.
The Trojans broke through in the 25th minute when Madyson Brown scored her first goal of the season, giving Mount Olive a 1-0 advantage. Brown was a consistent threat throughout the match, finishing with six shots, including four on goal.
Mount Olive took the one-goal lead into halftime after dominating possession in the attacking third and outshooting Ferrum 14-1 over the opening 45 minutes.
The pressure continued after halftime, and the Trojans eventually added some insurance in the 75th minute. Hannah Spear found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, with Ellie Brock providing the assist to extend Mount Olive’s lead to 2-0.
The UMO defense took care of the rest, holding Ferrum to just four shots in the second half.
Goalkeeper Anais Coyne made three saves to record the shutout, improving her record to 2-0-2 on the season.
Yaneli Sanchez led the Trojans with seven shots, while Brown recorded six and Tanya Granholm added four. Ferrum goalkeeper Kailyn Myers finished with 10 saves.
Mount Olive held a 27-5 advantage in total shots, a 12-3 edge in shots on goal and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Trojans return home Saturday when they host Virginia State at 3 p.m. at Amon Field.
