August 4, 2026, 75, Goldsboro – Michael John Shafter, 75, Goldsboro, NC resident, passed away Tuesday morning, August 4, 2026, while a patient at Wayne UNC Healthcare.
Mr. Shafer, born in Burtonwood, England, served in the United States Navy for seven years. Upon his discharge, he began working with the United States Postal Service, serving in the Raleigh NC main post office for 20 years.
He was a member of Legacy Baptist Church in Mount Olive. It is there that funeral services will be held Friday, August 7, at 3:00 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Joshua Boatright. Burial rites, with military honors, will immediately follow the service in the church yard. Visitation with the Shafer family will take place at the church during the hour prior to the service.
Mr. Shafer leaves behind his wife, Joan Bishop Shafer; two sons, Robert Eugene Eaton and wife, Heather, of Rochester, Pennsylvania, and James MIchael Bishop and wife, Mikayla, of Goldsboro; five grandchildren, Peyton, Nicholas, Jazlyn, and Declan Eaton, and Daisy Mae Bishop; a sister, Carol Williams of Florida; two brothers, James Shafer and Wayne Shafer, both of Goldsboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Christian Shafer and Gladys Irene Cannon Shafer; and a brother, Gary Shafer.
