July 23, 2026, 86, Goldsboro – William Douglas “Bill” Smith, 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Born in Wayne County on April 9, 1940, Bill was the son of the late Douglas and Pattie Mae Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half-brothers, Ronnie Smith and Dennis Glover.
A hardworking, dependable, and enterprising man, Bill dedicated 37 years of service to Quicks, Inc. in Goldsboro, where he worked as an installer and in maintenance. His strong work ethic and commitment to doing every job well earned him the respect of those who worked alongside him throughout his career. In addition to his years at Quicks, Bill also owned and operated several car washes throughout Eastern North Carolina, reflecting his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to serving his community through honest, hard work.
At the center of Bill’s life was his unwavering Christian faith. He was a devoted member of First Christian Church in Goldsboro, where he faithfully served as a deacon and lifted his voice in worship as a member of the church choir. His quiet spirit of service and love for his church family reflected the faith that guided his life each day.
Bill also answered the call to serve his country with honor in the United States Air Force. During those years, he developed a passion for skydiving, embracing both the excitement and adventure it offered. He also found great joy riding motorcycles with his family, creating memories that will forever be treasured.
Dedicated not only to his family and church but also to his community, Bill was a proud member of the Adamsville Lions Club in Goldsboro, where he enjoyed serving others and making a positive difference in the lives of those around him.
Above all else, Bill cherished his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose kindness, steady presence, and gentle heart touched all who knew him. His greatest happiness came from spending time with those he loved, and the legacy of his faith, service, and devotion will continue to inspire them for generations to come.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Catherine Cogdell Smith; his son, David Smith and wife, Jennifer; grandchildren, Dylan and Sean; his stepson, Scott Adamson and wife, Joy; his sister, Sarah Smith Rusk; his half-brother, Michael Smith; his half-sisters, Libby Edwards and Pam Glover Stafford and husband, Mike; his brother-in-law, George Cogdell and wife, Sherrie; his special cousin, Allen Cannon; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall at First Christian Church. A service to celebrate Bill’s life will follow at 12:00 noon in the church sanctuary with Pastor Tom Millay officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Bill’s memory to First Christian Church, 1609 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
Although his earthly journey has ended, Bill’s life stands as a testimony of faith, humble service, and enduring love. His family finds comfort in knowing that he has entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, where he now rests in eternal peace.
