July 24, 2026, 69, Goldsboro – James “Jim” Smith Whitley, born October 20, 1956, passed away on July 24, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Whitley; his son, James Smith Whitley Jr., and daughter-in-law, Cassidy Whitley; his grandson, James “Smith” Whitley III; his step-daughter, Macie Mooring; his step-grandson, Jaylen; and his mother, Shirley Graham. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl Montague Whitley; father, Donald Whitley; his step-father, Blair Graham; special uncle, J. P. Smith, Jr.; special cousin, LaVee Hamer; his step-granddaughter, Caleigh; and step-grandson, Cayden.
Jim was a decorated graduate of Massanutten Military Academy, attended North Carolina State University, and dedicated his career to his passion for agriculture, retiring from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.
A dedicated family man, Jim could often be found sitting in his mother’s kitchen with a hot cup of coffee, talking on the phone with his son, James, playing with his grandson, Jaylen, or sharing pictures of his new bundle of joy, Smith. These simple, everyday moments reflected what mattered most to him: being present with the people he loved.
Though impossible to fully capture in words, Jim will be remembered for his big heart, warm smile, and unmistakable, gentle laugh. Those who knew him carry countless memories of the many ways he brought laughter and light into their lives, memories that will be cherished always.
A devoted attendee of Hood Swamp Friends Meeting, Jim found strength in his faith throughout his brave battle with cancer. We take comfort in knowing he is at peace with our Heavenly Father.
A graveside service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026 at the Smith Family Cemetery with Pastor Otto Griffin and Dr. Cheryl Benson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.
The family is grateful for the exceptional care provided over the years by the Duke Cancer Center, as well as Kitty Askins Hospice Center in his final days.

He will be missed beyond measure.
