July 10, 2026, 81, Goldsboro – William “Bill” Darryl Therrell, 81, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, July 10, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on March 5, 1945, at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, Bill was the son of the late William Perry Therrell and Wilma McLaurin Therrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy Edwards.
A proud patriot, Bill honorably served his country in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he became known for his mechanical talents, working for many years as a lawn mower repairman with Grantham True Value. Whether repairing an engine or helping a friend in need, Bill approached every task with patience, skill, and a willing heart.
Bill was a man of many interests. He was a member of the Wayne County Coin Club and enjoyed collecting coins, flying, and spending peaceful days fishing. Above all, however, nothing brought him greater joy than being surrounded by his family.
The foundation of Bill’s life was his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. He loved God above all else and faithfully lived out that love through his devotion to his family and his church. A dedicated member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church, Bill found great joy in worship and especially loved singing whenever the opportunity arose. His faith, gentle spirit, and servant’s heart were an inspiration to those who knew him.
Bill leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and devotion that will be cherished by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Ellen Kornegay Therrell; his daughters, Ruth Leigh Thompson and husband, Dennis, and Laura Daryl Getz and husband, Robert; his grandchildren, William Dale Miller (Lelia), David Clark Russell (Amy), Leah Dennise Jackson (Tommy), and Sydni Thompson (Sean); his great-grandchildren, Abbie Miller, Caleb Miller, Bethany Miller, Kaden Russell, Emmi Jackson, and T.J. Jackson; his sister, Wanda Gail Medlin; along with many extended family members, church family, and dear friends who will forever treasure his memory.
The family will receive friends at Faith Free Will Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. A service to celebrate Bill’s life will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Hemant Patel and Pastor Christian Powell officiating. Interment will be in Providence Church Cemetery.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Gentiva Hospice for the compassionate love and exceptional care shown to Bill during his final days. The family would like to especially thank his nurses: Amber Game, Melissa Bain and Allison Pipkin. Your kindness brought comfort not only to him but to the entire family.
