Ruth Barnes Jones was born on December 3, 1922, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and was called home to glory after 103 remarkable years of faith, love, and resilience. Born a twin to the late Rufus Barnes, Ruth overcame extraordinary childhood hardships — including a battle with blindness and the loss of her mother at age ten — to become a woman of tremendous strength and character. She dedicated her life to caring for others and pouring her love into her family for generations. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Ruth made her home in Prince George’s County, Maryland, for 59 years, where she was known for her beautiful flowers, her legendary cooking, and her unwavering faith in God. On December 3, 2022, the State of Maryland honored her with a proclamation declaring her 100th birthday “Ruth Barnes Jones Day” — a testament to a life beautifully and purposefully lived. She leaves behind a legacy that will forever bloom in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Her secret to a long life, shared freely with all who asked: “Live right, treat everybody right, stay busy, and mind your own business!”
