Born on November 19, 1938, in Mount Olive, North Carolina, Betty was a member of St. Mary’s of the Angels Catholic Church. She was a woman of unwavering faith, exceptional work ethic, and a generous spirit whose kindness touched countless lives throughout her community.
Betty’s career in pharmacy began in 1954 at Clinic Drug Store in Mount Olive, where she faithfully served for 24 years. Determined to further her education while balancing work and family, she graduated from the night school program at Goldsboro High School in 1969. She later worked for Boyd’s Drugs and continued with the pharmacy after it became John White Drugs.
In 1984, Betty fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening Betty’s Drugs, becoming a respected business owner and healthcare provider in her hometown. She proudly operated the pharmacy until 1997, when she sold the business to Eckerd Drugs. Betty will always be remembered for introducing the area’s first pharmacy drive-thru window service and, even more importantly, for her compassionate heart. She never hesitated to personally deliver medications to homebound patients, often after business hours, simply because she believed no one should go without the care they needed. Her final years of employment were spent as a caregiver and in-home companion, continuing her lifelong mission of serving and comforting others.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Betty Ann Grady of Ludowici, Georgia; daughters-in-law, Janice Davidson and Wendy Davidson, both of Mount Olive, North Carolina; stepdaughters, Kathy Jacobs and husband, Tony Jacobs , and Mary Ann Barwick and husband, Danny Barwick, all of Mount Olive; her sister, Elizabeth “Teenie” Taylor and husband, Shelton “Shell” Taylor of Vass, North Carolina; her brother, Robert Allen “Frog” Darden and wife, Kay Darden, of Mount Olive; grandchildren, Billy Lee Grady and wife, Lauren Grady, Scottie Davidson and wife, Courtney Davidson, Jessica Hoskin and husband, Jesse Hoskin, Rebecca McGowen and husband, Richard McGowen, Brandon Davidson and partner, Zack Russell, E.
