July 4, 2026, 73, Goldsboro – Staff Sgt. William Bernard Newsome, 73, of Goldsboro, peacefully departed this earthly life on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at UNC Health Wayne in Goldsboro, surrounded by family, love, the care and compassion of those who served him.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, July 10, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park North. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
Born in Wayne County on January 3, 1953, Staff Sgt. William was the son of the late Reverend Bernard Newsome and Mable Beatrice Thompson Newsome.
He was a graduate of Charles B. Aycock class of 71. He proudly served his country for 20 years in the United States Air Force and carried with him the values of duty, honor and commitment throughout his life. He also served the state of North Carolina by way of Cherry Hospital for 19 years. He served his community though various organizations and projects. He was also a devoted member of the Military Retiree’s Club, where he enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of fellow veterans who shared in his experiences, his love for service and his community.
In addition to his parents, Staff Sgt. William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pertrina Coley Newsome, whose memory remained close to his heart throughout his life.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his daughter, Odettia Newsome-Phillips, husband, Demetrick and Ah’Mir McCormick of Goldsboro.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Bernadette and Brenda. He leaves to also cherish his memory, brother, Curtis Newsome of Pikeville; his six sisters, Staris Morgan, Marsha Newsome, and Angela Newsome of Goldsboro, Sharon Gaskins and LaVon Newsome of Durham and Kay Cox of Pikeville. He also leaves behind a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and dear friends, who will forever treasure his memory.
