June 23, 2026, 94, Henderson – Rufus Ronald “Ron” Sutton passed away June 23, 2026. The second of seven children, he was born May 1, 1932 in La Grange, North Carolina to the late William I. Sutton and Belle Newsome Sutton. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Donna Jean Kunch Sutton, brothers, Frank and Jack, and a sister Elizabeth Ann.
Ron grew up in La Grange on the family farm. After graduating from high school, he spent several years working before enlisting in the United States Army where he served for 3 years. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he used his GI benefits to further his education ultimately culminating in a Masters Degree in Hospital Administration from The Medical College of Virginia.
During this time, Ron met and married his wife, Donna Jean, in Iowa. The couple returned to North Carolina where they began their family. He spent his professional career in hospital administration at The Memorial Hospital in Danville, Virginia. He was respected for his work ethic, attention to detail, and integrity. During his time in Danville, Ron was involved in both civic and professional organizations. He hated to be cooped up inside and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in the yard.
He and Donna Jean retired to Henderson, North Carolina in order to be close to his son and grandchildren. His family was important to him and he prioritized visits to Iowa and La Grange where he enjoyed helping his brothers on the family farm.
Ron was purposeful -and particular- in all his endeavors. He was an effective negotiator and drove a hard bargain. His family was often on the receiving end of his quick wit and playful teasing. He always found a way to get a laugh, or at least a reaction, from those he loved. He had high standards for himself and others and he was very proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments.
Funeral services for family and friends will be held Sunday, June 28, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Rouse Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends in the hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Surviving are his son, Michael Scott Sutton; grandchildren, Jacob Scott Sutton and Allison Marie Sutton; their mother, Henrietta Sutton; great-grandson, Henry Howard Sutton; siblings, Shelby Lee, Polly Teel, and Lynwood Sutton, along with many nieces and nephews.
