WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — More than 70 volunteers rolled up their sleeves to make a lasting impact across Wayne County during this year’s United Way of Wayne County Day of Action, contributing more than 200 hours of community service through projects that improved neighborhoods, supported families, and enhanced the quality of life for local residents.
United Way of Wayne County announced Thursday that 72 volunteers participated in this year’s Day of Action, completing a wide variety of service projects throughout the week.
Volunteers tackled projects across the county, including beautifying North Drive Elementary School and the Walnut Street Apartment Community Garden, conducting a litter sweep along William Street, assisting with Habitat for Humanity’s McNair housing project, constructing a wheelchair ramp to improve accessibility, restoring historic headstones at Willow Dale Cemetery, and delivering meals to homebound seniors through WAGES’ Meals on Wheels program.
The effort also focused on supporting children during the summer months. Volunteers assembled 300 lunch bags for the Little Sprouts Summer Lunch Program, helping provide nutritious meals for children while school is out of session. They also packed Summer Success learning kits for students participating in the Wayne County Public Library’s summer tutoring program.
According to United Way, the projects addressed a broad range of community needs, including reducing summer hunger, encouraging student achievement, improving accessibility for residents, preserving community spaces and local history, and caring for older adults.
The week’s success was made possible through the support of numerous local businesses and organizations. Volunteer teams from Sentry Insurance, Crawford Henderson Insurance, and Enterprise Mobility participated in projects throughout Wayne County, while Seymour Funeral Home & Cremation Service assembled Summer Success learning kits for students. Department heads from the City of Goldsboro also joined the effort by assembling 300 lunch bags for the Little Sprouts Summer Lunch Program.
This year’s Day of Action also introduced a new partnership with Tidal Wave Auto Spa, which selected United Way of Wayne County as a beneficiary of its Give Back Day fundraiser. The partnership provided community members with another opportunity to support local initiatives and highlighted the importance of community involvement beyond volunteer service.
“Day of Action shows what’s possible when a community comes together with a shared purpose,” said Sherry Archibald, executive director of United Way of Wayne County. “Whether building, packing, planting, delivering, or serving, every volunteer and partner helped create a lasting impact for our neighbors.”
United Way of Wayne County thanked every volunteer, business, nonprofit partner, and community organization that participated in this year’s event, saying the collective effort reflects the generosity, collaboration, and community spirit that continue to strengthen Wayne County.
