RALEIGH, NC – North Carolina landowners, gardeners and conservation enthusiasts can begin ordering tree seedlings for the upcoming planting season starting Wednesday, July 1, as the North Carolina Forest Service launches its annual tree seedling sale.
The N.C. Forest Service (NCFS) Nursery Program produces an average of 10 million tree seedlings each year, offering more than 40 native and genetically improved tree species. The annual production is enough to plant approximately 18,700 acres of land across the state.
“Our nursery program continues to provide affordable native tree seedlings that are geographically suitable for the state’s diverse forestlands,” said North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “By offering seedlings in different quantities, the program can help customers of all sizes whether the need is as few as 10 seedlings, or as many as several thousand. The annual seedling sale is just another way that the forest service strives to keep North Carolina’s woodlands healthy, growing and thriving.”
The nursery program offers both conifer and hardwood seedlings, including genetically improved varieties of Fraser fir, loblolly pine, longleaf pine, shortleaf pine, Eastern white pine and Virginia pine. These improved seedlings are bred to provide stronger growth, better disease resistance, straighter trunks and improved tree form, making them ideal for Christmas tree growers, timber production, wildlife habitat restoration and healthy forests.
Customers can place orders in several ways:
- Online at www.buynctrees.com
- By calling 1-888-NCTREES (1-888-628-7337) or 919-731-7988
- By mailing an order form from the FY 2026-27 Nursery Seedling Catalog to the Seedling Coordinator at 762 Claridge Nursery Road, Goldsboro, NC 27530
A digital version of the nursery catalog will soon be available through the N.C. Forest Service website, while printed catalogs will also be available beginning in July at local NCFS offices. The catalog includes descriptions of each species, recommended planting locations, pricing, order quantities and information on whether trees are best suited for wildlife habitat, forest restoration or commercial timber production.
The nursery accepts payment by check, money order, Mastercard and Visa.
Most containerized seedlings are available for planting between November and March, while bare root seedlings are typically available from January through March.
Customers may choose to have their orders shipped to one of 13 distribution centers across North Carolina for a small fee or delivered by UPS for an additional shipping charge. Seedlings may also be picked up at the NCFS Claridge Nursery in Goldsboro or the Linville River Nursery near Crossnore.
The annual seedling sale provides an affordable opportunity for homeowners, farmers, foresters and conservation groups to help restore forests, improve wildlife habitat and enhance North Carolina’s natural landscapes.
