WASHINGTON, D.C. — Wayne School of Engineering graduate Reilly Novchich was recognized by Congressman Don Davis during a special dinner honoring eastern North Carolina students who have accepted appointments to the nation’s prestigious U.S. service academies.
The event celebrated students whose appointments reflect years of academic excellence, leadership, strong character, and a commitment to serving the nation through military service.
Novchich accepted an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, joining a select group of students from across eastern North Carolina recognized by the congressman. Also honored were Harry Gribbin of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, who will also attend the Air Force Academy; Estelle Chafin of The Lawrenceville School and Brayden Wolford of Gates County High School, both of whom accepted appointments to the United States Naval Academy; and Joshua Taylor of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, who accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point but was unable to attend the event due to a scheduling conflict.
“As a U.S. Air Force Academy alumnus, I am extremely proud of them, their families, teachers, and everyone who helped them reach this moment,” Congressman Davis said. “Receiving an appointment takes years of hard work, discipline, leadership, and sacrifice. These young men and women represent the best of eastern North Carolina and the values our communities hold dear: commitment, perseverance, and putting others before yourself.”
Davis congratulated the students and their families during the dinner, praising their dedication and expressing confidence in their future military leadership.
“I look forward to seeing their leadership, service, and making eastern North Carolina proud,” Davis said.
Appointments to the nation’s service academies are highly competitive. Members of Congress may nominate candidates to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Students seeking admission must meet rigorous academic, physical, and leadership standards before receiving an appointment.
For Wayne County, Novchich’s selection represents a significant achievement for both the Wayne School of Engineering and the local community as he prepares to begin his military and academic career at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
