June 16, 2026, 68, Goldsboro – Hugh Alexander “Al” Tate, III, 68, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Born in Elizabeth City on January 6, 1958, he was the son of the late Hugh Alexander Tate, Jr. and Joyce Morton Tate.
Al is survived by his son, Hugh Alexander “Andy” Tate, IV; and sister, Jacqueline Tate.
A man of simple pleasures and genuine passion, he spent much of his life behind the microphone, working as a disc jockey for numerous radio stations across Eastern North Carolina. His warm voice and love of music touched the lives of countless listeners throughout the region. Al was a versatile and dependable presence who could be counted on for whatever the job required. Among his proudest work was performing satellite uplinks for Capitol Broadcasting Company, a testament to his technical skill and commitment to the craft.
Al enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He was always searching for a good bargain and took great pride in finding the best deals. He loved sharing a hearty meal with family and friends, never leaving a plate unfinished and always appreciating generous portions.
A lifelong music enthusiast, Al had an impressive knowledge of artists, records, and radio history. During his high school years, he even worked as a DJ, sharing his love of music with others. He enjoyed collecting and tinkering with radios, televisions, and stereo equipment, always looking for ways to improve his setup or discover a new station.
Al was an avid listener of talk radio and faithfully followed local news, weather, and programs such as The Tar Heel Traveler. He also enjoyed classic television shows, especially on weekend evenings.
Perhaps most importantly, Al was a devoted son. He spent several years helping care for his mother during her battle with dementia and later assisted his father by driving him to appointments when his eyesight declined. His willingness to care for and support his family was a true reflection of his loving and selfless nature.
When he wasn’t working, Al was most at home in front of the television, cheering on his beloved NC State Wolfpack. Whether it was basketball or football season, you could count on Al to be watching alongside his father and sister, sharing in the highs and lows that only true fans understand.
A graveside service to celebrate Al’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at 12 p.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Noé Juarez presiding. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home.
